In part 1 of this article we looked at some of ways that those close to you can create negative feelings around your dieting and weight loss efforts, and how to avoid being affected by them. In this second part, we'll talk about how to ensure that you are getting plenty of positive support to see you through the inevitable hard times that you'll encounter when dieting.


One great way is to find a diet partner around you. Whether it's a partner or someone in your household, a friend, a relative, a co-worker or someone from your gym, starting and following a diet with someone else always makes it much easier. It gives you someone to lean on when you have a sudden craving for your favorite junk food, someone to discuss the details of the particular diet with, and it also makes you feel like you don't want to let the other person down by breaking the diet.


Another way is simply to look in the local paper or to ask around, and you'll often find that there are weight loss support groups in your area who meet regularly. You might find this idea a little strange, but support groups really do work and you might find that having people to talk to about your weight loss and dieting issues, and also listening to the problems that others have, can be a big inspiration in getting through the hard times.


Finally, you can always find support online in the form of forums and other support groups. While online support is somewhat less effective than real-life support, the big advantage to it is that it's always available whenever you need it, even at 3am when all you want to do is take that last chocolate donut from its box. A quick search will reveal many weight loss support groups, so scan through them until you find one or more that you think you'll like, and join in some conversations.


No matter how easy or hard you typically find dieting, everyone can use some support when facing difficulties. Having another person or a group of people around you who understand what you're going through and will help you pull through it can be invaluable, and can truly make a big difference to the success of your weight loss efforts.

Include Cardio in Your Weight Loss Routine

I recently read a study that showed positive affects of incorporating cardiovascular activity with your weight training and nutrition program. The study concluded that a short but vigorous cardio routine is optimally the best type of cardio routine to perform if you are looking to lose weight and get in shape.


According to the study your cardiovascular workout should last no longer than 20 minutes per session, with one session per day for three days per week on non successive days. For those of us that see time as a factor for lack of exercising you can see that this only takes up 60 minutes of your time in a given week. This is a small of time to invest to lose that weight and make yourself healthier.


This means that if you like to run, run a bit faster for 20 minutes for three days out of the week just so long as it is not on back to back days.


The study showed that those who were in the study group increased their weight loss as opposed to the group that performed a normal cardio routine.


What this all means is that there may not be a need any longer to perform long sessions of cardio everyday of the week. Instead break your cardio routine down into vigorous sessions where you give it everything you have for 20 minutes and do it just three days per week.


As always do not forget that before you begin any exercise routine you should seek out the advice or a professional. You should also get a complete physical from your doctor or primary care physician to make sure that your body can handle the exercise, nutrition and weight loss program that you are about to go through.

3. Cut back or just cut out drinking sodas, lemonades or any drinks that contain sugar. There have been many people who just cut out the sweet drinks and lost weight by making this one change. If you drink Coke everyday and switch to Diet Coke, you should lose about 25 lbs in a year. Just watch out for diet sodas because artificial sweeteners can cause you to increase your appetite. Also Coke and other dark sodas contain phosphoric acid which can breakdown your teeth as well as your bones.


4. If you can, take a lunch to work with you. This way you are not tempted to eat high fat fast foods especially when you are hungry.


5. Sit when you eat. This way you are concentrating on your foods. Sitting helps you digest your foods better than standing or walking when eating.

4 Simple Nutrition Rules for Weight Loss

In 2005 the USDA released a new food pyramid guideline to help people eat properly and control their weight. But honestly, it didn't impress me and it was very confusing. There really are only 4 nutrition rules for weight loss. And here they are...


1. Eat a lot of fibrous fruits and vegetables


There are very, very few North Americans that eat enough fruits and vegetables. So if you do, you will be well on your way to fat loss. In fact, if you want to lose weight, its important to eat more than the recommended 5 servings per day. Aim for the top end of fruits and vegetables recommendations, and replace all your processed carbohydrates with healthier fruits and vegetables. In addition to being healthier, fruits and vegetables will also fill you up faster and longer.


2. Eat quality protein


Protein helps control your appetite. You should aim to eat small amounts of protein spread over the course of the day. This will help your mental energy levels as well and prevent you from getting tired and hungry. Good protein sources include whey protein, fish (salmon, tuna), beef, chicken, and alternative meats such as bison and ostrich.


3. Eliminate all added sugar from your diet


There is almost no redeeming quality to sugar. It can drain your mental energy, prevent you from losing body fat, and of course, give you cavities. There is no room in a weight loss program for added sugar. If you cut it out, you'll cut the fat.


4. Consuming only low-glycemic carbohydrates


Avoid all foods from a bag or box, including all processed carbohydrates. So forget the obvious (chips, candy) and even the supposedly healthy (pretzels, instant oatmeal). You'll be less tired if you stick to yams and vegetables for your carbohydrate intake.


That's it. Eat whole, natural foods. Don't eat it if God didn't make it himself!
